Used and Rebuilt Transfer Cases for 4WD and AWD Vehicles

Trinity Auto Parts supplies tested used OEM transfer cases and rebuilt transfer cases for 4WD and AWD trucks, SUVs and crossovers across the USA and Canada. The transfer case splits engine power between the front and rear axles, so the replacement has to match your vehicle exactly; we confirm the fit against your VIN before the unit ships.

We also supply transfer case shift motors and popular units such as the NP246 for GM trucks. Every unit, for manual-shift and electronic-shift applications alike, comes from a well-maintained running vehicle and is fully tested, inspected and guaranteed before it ships.

What you get with every transfer case

Inspected and tested before shipping

Every transfer case is inspected before it ships: the case for cracks and leaks, the chain and gears for wear, and the shift mechanism for full engagement in every range. Rebuilt units have worn internal parts replaced and are tested.

VIN-matched fitment

Transfer cases vary by drivetrain, transmission, shift type and output configuration, and two units that look alike can have different ratios or input splines. We match the unit to your 17-digit VIN and the ID tag on the case, and confirm fitment before dispatch.

Warranty and free shipping

Every transfer case ships with a warranty, up to 2 years on select parts, with the exact term on your quote. Shipping is free across the USA and Canada, return shipping is free, and delivery is typically 3–5 business days in the continental US.

Why buy from Trinity Auto Parts

Supplying drivetrain parts since 1990, BBB accredited

We have been supplying used and rebuilt auto parts since 1990 and are BBB accredited. You talk to people who know the difference between a part-time 4WD case and a full-time AWD unit.

Used OEM or rebuilt, your choice

A tested, low-mileage used OEM transfer case is the best value for most trucks and SUVs. A rebuilt unit costs more but has new chain, bearings and seals inside. We will tell you honestly which option makes sense for how the vehicle is used.

Straight answers by phone or form

Use the quote form on this page or call +1 725-208-4566. Tell us the VIN, whether the vehicle shifts into 4WD with a lever or a switch, and what the old unit is doing, and we will come back with options and a price.

Transfer Case Buyer's Guide

This guide is for owners and shops replacing the transfer case on a 4WD or AWD truck, SUV or crossover. Decide first between used OEM and rebuilt, then confirm the exact model and shift type your vehicle uses.

What is a transfer case?

A transfer case is the gearbox bolted behind the transmission on 4WD and AWD vehicles that splits engine power between the front and rear axles. Part-time units lock the axles together and add a low range for off-road use; full-time and AWD units include a center differential or clutch so they can stay engaged on pavement.

Used vs rebuilt transfer case: which should you buy?

For most vehicles a tested, low-mileage used OEM transfer case is the best value: the factory unit at a fraction of the cost of new. Choose rebuilt if the vehicle works hard off-road or tows, or you want new chain, bearings and seals inside.

How to make sure it fits: what we need for a quote

  • VIN (17 digits): driver-side dash at the windshield base, driver door jamb sticker, or registration.
  • Year, make, model and trim.
  • Engine size and drivetrain (part-time 4WD, full-time 4WD or AWD).
  • Transmission type (automatic or manual) and its code if you know it; the transfer case input must match the transmission.
  • Shift type: floor lever or dash switch, and whether there is an Auto 4WD position.
  • Transfer case ID tag: a round metal tag or stamped label on the rear half of the case, listing the model and build information.
  • Photos of the old unit, including the tag, output ends and shift motor if fitted.

Signs your transfer case is failing

  • Grinding or whining from under the vehicle that changes with road speed.
  • Difficulty shifting into or out of 4WD, or popping out of four-wheel drive.
  • Fluid leaking from the output seals or the case halves.
  • Binding or clunking on turns, or a 4WD warning on the dash.
  • No front-axle drive even though the indicator shows 4WD engaged.

Transfer case motor

The transfer case motor, often called the encoder motor or shift motor, is the electric actuator that moves the shift fork on push-button 4WD systems. When it fails the vehicle may refuse to change range, get stuck between 2WD and 4WD, or show a 4WD warning while the case itself is healthy. If the internals are sound, replacing just the motor is a much cheaper repair. We supply tested motors on their own, and many complete units include one.

NP246 transfer case

The NP246 is an electronically shifted, chain-driven transfer case used in GM full-size 4WD pickups and SUVs. It offers 2WD, Auto 4WD, 4-High and 4-Low; in Auto mode a clutch pack engages the front axle as needed. We supply tested used and rebuilt NP246 units and matching shift motors. GM used several similar cases across its trucks, so send us the VIN and the tag from your unit and we will confirm it is an NP246 before quoting.

4WD vs AWD transfer cases

A part-time 4WD transfer case locks the front and rear outputs together, so 4WD is for loose surfaces only, and it usually offers a low range. An AWD or full-time 4WD case uses a center differential, viscous coupling or clutch so it can stay engaged on dry pavement. The two are not interchangeable even on the same model, and some vehicles use a case that does both. Send the VIN and we will check.

Installation & programming notes

A shop will typically fit new input and output seals, fill with the fluid the manufacturer specifies, transfer the shift motor and sensors if they are not included, and check the driveshaft joints while everything is apart. On electronic-shift systems the shift motor position may need a relearn with a scan tool, and the control module should be checked for stored faults after the swap. Manual-shift units need the linkage adjusted so every range engages fully.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of a failing transfer case?

Common symptoms are grinding or whining from under the vehicle, difficulty shifting into or out of 4WD, fluid leaks from the output seals, and the vehicle popping out of four-wheel drive. On electronic-shift systems a 4WD warning on the dash is another sign. Have the fluid and shift motor checked before assuming the case itself has failed.

Does the used transfer case come with the transfer case motor?

It varies by listing. Many of our electronic-shift transfer cases include the shift motor, but some units ship without it, and manual-shift cases do not use one. We confirm exactly what is included with you before the unit ships. If you only need the motor, we can supply a tested transfer case motor on its own.

Is it better to get a used or rebuilt transfer case?

For most trucks and SUVs a tested, low-mileage used OEM transfer case is the best value, because it is the factory unit at a fraction of the cost of new. A rebuilt unit costs more but has new chain, bearings and seals inside, which suits vehicles that tow or work off-road. Both ship with a warranty.

Do you have NP246 transfer cases?

Yes. We supply tested used and rebuilt NP246 transfer cases for GM full-size 4WD pickups and SUVs, along with the shift motors that go with them. Because GM used several similar cases across its trucks, send us your VIN and a photo of the tag on the case so we can confirm you need an NP246 before quoting.

Why won't my 4WD engage?

On push-button systems the most common causes are a failed transfer case shift motor, a wiring or switch fault, or low fluid, rather than the case itself. If the motor tries to move but the range never changes, or the vehicle is stuck between ranges, the internals may be worn. A shop scan of the 4WD control module usually narrows it down.

Is a 4WD transfer case the same as an AWD transfer case?

No. A part-time 4WD transfer case locks the front and rear outputs together and is meant for loose surfaces, usually with a low range. An AWD or full-time unit uses a center differential or clutch so it can stay engaged on dry pavement. They are not interchangeable even on the same model, so tell us which system your vehicle has.

Do you ship to Canada?

Yes. We ship transfer cases across the USA and Canada, and shipping is free. Typical delivery is 3 to 5 business days in the continental US; deliveries to Canada and freight items can take a little longer. Your quote includes an estimated delivery time for your address.

What information do you need for an accurate quote?

The 17-digit VIN is the most important item, because it tells us the drivetrain and transfer case your vehicle was built with. Add the year, make, model, engine size, transmission type, and whether the vehicle shifts into 4WD with a lever or a switch. A photo of the tag on the case and the shift motor helps us confirm the match.

What if the transfer case doesn't fit?

Return shipping is free, so you are not stuck with the wrong unit. We match every transfer case to your VIN and the tag on the case and confirm fitment before dispatch, which keeps fitment problems rare. If something is still wrong, contact us at +1 725-208-4566 and we will arrange the return and the correct part.
