Find Your Parts Quicker , Easier and More Reliable
Trinity Auto Parts supplies tested used OEM and rebuilt throttle body assemblies for cars, trucks and SUVs. That includes electronic throttle bodies (ETB) with the throttle position sensor and actuator motor built in, cable-operated throttle bodies for older fuel-injected engines, and TBI units for older trucks. Every throttle body is inspected before shipping and VIN-matched to your vehicle before dispatch.
The throttle body sits between the air filter and the intake manifold and controls how much air enters the engine. On a modern electronic throttle body the engine computer moves the throttle plate with a small motor and reads its position from a built-in sensor, so a worn motor, a dirty plate or a failed sensor can cause rough idle, stalling, hesitation or a reduced-power warning. Send us your VIN and we will match the right unit. Every throttle body comes from a well-maintained running vehicle and is fully tested, inspected and guaranteed before it ships.
Each unit is checked for a plate that moves freely through its full travel, a clean bore without scoring, intact connector pins, and a sensor and motor that respond. Rebuilt units have worn parts replaced and are bench tested.
Throttle bodies vary by engine, bore size, connector pin count and whether the throttle is cable or electronically driven. We confirm the part number and application against your 17-digit VIN before dispatch.
Every throttle body ships with a warranty, up to 2 years on select parts, with the exact term on your quote. Shipping is free across the USA and Canada, and return shipping is free if the part is not right for your vehicle.
Trinity Auto Parts was founded in 1990 and is BBB accredited. We have been matching used and rebuilt parts to VINs for decades, and we know which throttle body questions to ask before an order ships.
A used OEM throttle body is the lowest-cost route and keeps the factory sensor and motor calibration. A rebuilt unit costs more but has worn components replaced, which is worth it on high-mileage engines with sticky throttle plates.

This guide is for anyone whose engine idles roughly, stalls at stops or has gone into reduced-power mode and whose shop has traced the fault to the throttle body. Decide first whether cleaning and a relearn will fix it, then confirm whether your engine uses an electronic or cable-operated unit.
A throttle body is the valve between the air filter and the intake manifold that controls how much air enters the engine. On modern drive-by-wire vehicles an electric motor inside it opens the throttle plate on command from the engine computer and a built-in position sensor reports the plate angle; older engines open the plate with a cable from the pedal.
Buy a used OEM throttle body when a matching donor unit is available and your engine has moderate mileage; you get the factory motor, gears and sensor. Choose rebuilt when the used supply is thin or the design has a known wear point such as worn actuator gears, because the rebuilder replaces those parts.
| Factor | Used OEM | Rebuilt |
|---|---|---|
| Condition | Donor unit, cleaned, inspected and tested | Housing with worn motor, gears, sensor or seals replaced, then tested |
| Typical cost vs new | Often 50–70% less than a new dealer part | Less than new, more than used |
| Availability | Good for common engines; harder for rare bore sizes | Wider; housings are rebuilt to order |
| Best for | Moderate-mileage engines and exact factory match | High-mileage engines and known wear points |
| Component | Usually included? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Throttle body housing and plate | Yes | Bore checked for scoring and carbon. |
| Throttle position sensor (TPS) | Usually | Built into electronic units; attached on most cable units. Confirmed before shipping. |
| Throttle actuator motor and gears | Yes on electronic units | Integrated on most designs. |
| Idle air control valve | Varies by listing | Cable-operated units only; confirmed before shipping. |
| Gasket or O-ring | Varies by listing | Most shops fit a new gasket. |
| Accelerator pedal position sensor | No | A separate part at the pedal. |

An electronic throttle body has no cable. The accelerator pedal sends a signal to the engine computer, which drives a small motor inside the throttle body to open the plate and reads its position from a built-in sensor. Most vehicles built since the mid-2000s use this drive-by-wire design. Common wear points are the actuator gears, the motor and the sensor track. Because those parts are integrated, the unit is replaced as an assembly and then relearned.
The throttle position sensor tells the engine computer how far the throttle plate is open. On older cable-operated throttle bodies it is a small bolt-on sensor that can be replaced on its own, and most of our cable-type units ship with it attached. On electronic throttle bodies the sensor is built into the housing, usually as a redundant pair, and is not sold separately, so a failed sensor means a throttle body replacement.
After a throttle body is replaced or cleaned, the engine computer usually needs to relearn the closed-throttle position and idle airflow. Some vehicles do this on their own after a few minutes of idling and a short drive. Others need a scan-tool relearn, and a few makes use a manual procedure based on key and pedal timing from the service manual. A missed relearn is the most common reason a fresh throttle body idles badly, so confirm the procedure for your vehicle before condemning the part.
A shop will usually try cleaning first, because carbon buildup around the plate mimics a failed throttle body. If replacement is needed, the job is straightforward: disconnect the battery, remove the intake hose, unbolt the unit, fit a new gasket, torque the bolts evenly and reconnect the connector. Never force the plate open by hand on an electronic unit; that can strip the actuator gears. No VIN programming is needed, but most vehicles need the relearn described above.

The usual symptoms are a rough, high or surging idle, stalling at stops, hesitation when you press the accelerator, a reduced-power warning, and a check engine light with throttle-related codes such as P0121 or P2119. Have a shop clean the throttle body and check the wiring first, because carbon buildup causes the same complaints.
Usually, yes. On electronic throttle bodies the position sensor and actuator motor are built into the housing and cannot be bought separately, so the assembly always includes them. On cable-operated throttle bodies the sensor is a bolt-on part and most of our units ship with it attached, along with the idle air control valve where fitted. We confirm the contents before shipping.
An electronic throttle body is drive-by-wire: the pedal sends a signal to the engine computer, which opens the plate with a built-in motor and reads its position from an integrated sensor. A cable throttle body is pulled open directly by the accelerator cable and uses a separate idle air control valve for idle speed. Most vehicles built since the mid-2000s are electronic.
Usually, yes. The engine computer has to relearn the closed-throttle position and idle airflow of the new unit. Some vehicles do it on their own after idling and a short drive, others need a scan-tool relearn, and a few makes use a manual key-and-pedal procedure. A rough idle right after installation is almost always a missed relearn, not a bad part.
Often, yes. Carbon buildup around the throttle plate is the most common cause of rough idle and stalling, and cleaning it with throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth, followed by a relearn, fixes many cases. Replace the unit when the plate binds, the bore is scored, the actuator gears are worn, or the position sensor reads erratically after cleaning.
A tested used OEM throttle body is a sound repair on a moderate-mileage engine and often costs 50 to 70 percent less than a new dealer part. We inspect the bore, plate, motor and sensor and check the connector before shipping, and every unit carries a warranty. For a high-mileage engine or a design with known wear points, a rebuilt unit is the safer choice.
Yes. We ship across the USA and Canada. Continental US deliveries typically arrive in 3 to 5 business days; Canadian and freight shipments can take longer. Shipping is free, and free return shipping applies to Canadian orders as well.
Your 17-digit VIN is the most important item, because it tells us the exact engine, transmission and options your vehicle was built with. Add the year, make, model and trim, the part number from the old unit if you can read it, and a photo or two. We confirm the match before we ship.
Return it with free return shipping. We VIN-match every part before dispatch, so misfits are rare, but if the unit you receive does not match your vehicle, contact us at [email protected] or call +1 725-208-4566 and we will arrange the return and a replacement or refund under the warranty on your quote.
